The Practice

For 22 years SQC Architecture (SQCA) has successfully collaborated with clients to design and deliver creative and cost effective buildings that serve the users well. The result is our growing positive legacy of customised structures across the ACT and regional NSW.

We are an award winning Canberra based practice, well renowned for our public infrastructure focus based on a desire to invest in projects of high public and community value. Our substantial body of work includes aged care projects; churches and associated community complexes; educational facilities; childcare centres; recreational facilities; and specialist community consultancies.

While today we operate with a team of professional, technical and administration staff, the practice was originally launched by Ric Small, on 20 February 1995 as a partnership known as Richard Small and Associates.  In July 1996 Ric and Phil Quinton formed Richard Small & Phil Quinton Architects Pty Ltd. and the practice moved from the original studio in Murranji Street, Hawker to commercial premises at the Hawker Professional Centre, our office for 21 years.  Project commissions were Canberra based with a mix of ACT Government, Commonwealth government, community sector and private residential clients.

Murray Coleman became a Director in July 2004, instigating the practice name change to Small Quinton Coleman Architects. Then in 2007, in response to the growing demand for interior design services, we established Dare2Design Interiors, as a complimentary trading entity. This exciting boutique firm, rebranded The Peppermint Room in 2011, now offers graphic and interior design services. Industry teacher and leading professional, Lisa Biddiscombe joined the team as the Senior Interior Designer in 2012 before becoming a Director in 2013. The following year Nicholas Goodwin joined the firm, bringing with him 28 years of architectural experience, including expertise in both heritage and access. Nicholas became a director in July of 2015.

Recently in April 2017 we relocated from our long time residence at Hawker Professional Centre to our new larger premises at Thynne Street, Bruce. Today our project commissions fetch a further field with work primarily in the ACT region, alongside work within NSW, VIC & QLD. The work we do continues to consist of ACT Government, Commonwealth Government, community sector, commercial fitouts/refurbishments and residential clients.

Today Ric, Lisa and Nicholas head a friendly team of highly competent, creative architects, interior designers and CAD specialists who are well supported by the business and administration staff. Our design professionals have extensive experience in diverse roles and project types within the building industry, both in ACT and further afield. Among our strengths are expertise in the specialist areas of access and heritage.

The key distinctives of the practice are embedded in our motto, values and people. We approach projects as unique commissions, realising each client’s vision through collaboration and creative design that ensure fit for purpose, cost effective and aesthetically pleasing solutions.

The practice principles of integrity, professionalism and personal service reflect our understanding that buildings are produced by people for people and that consequently, positive relations with each other, our clients, the general public and industry affiliates are paramount. For us, ethical conduct also includes providing technical, social and environmentally responsible solutions to the client brief as applied to setting, design and material selection. Our professionalism and total commitment is expressed through the excellent, quality assured process and product outcome every client enjoys regardless of the project size or complexity.

With over 1000 completed project under our belt and over 22 years of industry experience, we are confident of our capacity and experience to deliver on new opportunities and design challenges.
